About

Nestled in the heart of Ruatorea, in the forest trees of Manutahi hill, patupaiarehe the kaitiaki of our ngāhere have built their homes. According to Ngāti Porou folklore, patupaiarehe are the guardians and the spiritual embodiment of our environment.

We welcome you to experience the magic and whimsy of our Manutahi patupaiarehe, immerse yourself in the dense natural forest and all its beauty, and engage with our artists to celebrate Te Ara Patupaiarehe

Te Ara Patupaiarehe is an interpretation and celebration of traditional Ngati Porou folklore as taught to the students of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Waiu o Ngati Porou by their beloved teacher, orator, and song writer, Nanny Kuini Moehau Reedy.

Guided by their art teachers the students have responded to Nanny Moehau’s teachings, delved into their imaginations, and created unique artworks that represent patupaiarehe and the spirits of our taiao.

Kuini Reedy was born in 1941 at Waipiro Bay and raised in Hiruharama, a small village settlement in the foothills of her ancestral maunga, Mt Hikurangi. Her education journey led her to Waikato University to study Te Reo Māori before relocating to Wellington to pursue her tohu in teaching, education and mātauranga Māori at Victoria University.

Kuini has taught and lectured at all levels of education from Te Kohanga Reo to Kura Kaupapa Māori, primary, secondary, and tertiary, and also in government departments.

She has been described by many as a prolific composer of creative artforms, a writer and performing arts specialist but ultimately a keeper of Māori folklore, who imparts traditional indigenous knowledge through language, culture and performance. A key component of the Te Kohanga Reo Movement since its inception, she continues to move kohanga whānau in te reo Māori and whānau development nationally.

Te Ara Patupaiarehe is dedicated to Kuini Moehau Reedy, and in celebration of her teachings, creativity and leadership in Ngati Porou.
